  1. 1C Opening

A1. Opening Variants

Responses (over all opening variants)

1) 11-16 , bal.

may be 5332 with 5-crd M

a) 1D :

- 0-9 , any distr. (if unbal. 0-7/8)

- 16+ ., bal.

2) 11-16 , 4-4-4-1 (poss. 5440 with 5-crd m)

b) 1H / 1S : min. 4H/S, 9+ (1S denies 4-crd H).

4) Strong club : unbal. 0-3 losers

c) 1 NT : 10-12, bal., normally no 4-crd M (except a weak suit in 4333)

5) 23-24, bal.

d) 2C :

- 9-11 , 6-crd C

- 12+, unbal., start of Canapé, min. 3-crd C (or doubleton, in 7222)

6) 9 Tricks, bal., usually with 6-crd m

e) 2D : as 2C

f) 2H / 2S : 5-crd suit with 2 top honors, 12+. Asks Opener over Strength and Support

g) 2NT : 13-15, bal., normally no 4-crd M (except a weak suit in 4333)

h) 3C / 3D : AKQxxx or AKJxxx, nothing on the side

i) 3H / 3S : Barrage, 7-crd suit with at least KJ10, at most AQ10

Basics :

- Responder shows as quickly as possible 3 Strength ranges:

- negative : 0-9 . Game practically impossible, except if opener has one of the
strong variants

- semipositive : 8-11. together with a maximum opener in a weak
variant produces a game-forcing situation
- positive : 12+ or adequate distributional strength

Variants b,d,e reveal on the second round whether semipositive or positive (positive = bidding game, completing a Canapé or Jumping). If opener shows a maximum, a positive hand may not completely be shown, as the auction is already game-forcing.

- Opener- strength ranges (in the 11-16 Variants):

- Minimum : 11-13

- Maximum : 15-16

- 14 : „Matter of taste"

- in the frequent opening variants the main goal, along with the declaration of strength range, is to as fast as possible find at least a 4-3 fit.

A2. Rebids by Opener over Responses to 1C

  1. 1C – 1D (0-9 or 16+)
  1. 1 H : can be 3-crd H, if 3-3-4-3 or 3-3-3-4. No distinction min.-max.
  2. 1S : Always at least 4 Cards. No distinction between min.-max.
  3. 1 NT : 8 Cards in m, poss. with 5-crd D. No distinction min.-max.
  4. 2C : 4441 with 14-16 (with 4441/11-13 bid 1H or 1S !)
    then : 2D/H/S – to play (with 2-5-3-3: 2D ! with 3-5-3-2 : 2H)
2NT – forcing , asks for Singleton, rebid suit under singleton.
    Then singleton by Responder = Total-control-ask (0-3/4/5)
Else suit below game sets trumps
    then Cue-bids (3NT by Opener = 5440 with
    5-crd m).
  5. 2D/H/S, 3C : Strong, 0-3 losers, Beta- Ask in the Suit
  6. 2NT : 23-24 bal. Then Baron, Transfer, 4NT quantitative
  7. 3NT : 9 Tricks, usually based over strong Hand with good (6-crd) Minor. (25-27 bal. over 1D opening !)
  1. 1C – 1H (8+)
  1. 1 NT : Minimum, no 4-crd S
  2. 2H : Minimum, 4-crd H
  3. 2D : Maximum, values in D (at least Hxx)
  4. 1S : min. or max., may be 3-crd S (if max., then no Diamond values).

    Note : Maximum with 4-crd H must rebid 1S or 2D!!!
  5. 2C : 4441/max., with any singleton (poss. 4441, with 4 of partner’s suit and a „good" minimum). Then as in the „old" 2C-opening, then 2D/H/S is theoretically to play. Responder gives no more information, but steers/asks and decides.
  6. 2S, 3C/D/H = strong, Beta-Asks
  7. 2NT : 23-24 bal., then Baron, Transfer, 4NT = Ace-asking !
  8. 3NT : 9 Tricks.
  1. 1C – 1S (8+)
  2. a) 1 NT : min (even with 4441 min, singleton spade)

    b) 2D/H : max., can include 4-crd S

    c) 2C ; 4441, max . (poss. 4441 with 4 in Partner’s suit and a „good" Minimum) Continuations above

    d) 2S : min., 4-crd S

    e) 3C/D/H : = strong, as above, Beta-Asks . Strong in Spades must double-jump in one of the other suit bids, because 3S is not possible (see f)

    f) 2NT / 3NT : s.o., bal. 23-24 / 9 Tricks

  • 1C - 1 NT (10-12)
    1. Pass : min., 4432,4333, 4441
    2. 3NT : max., ., 4432,4333
    3. 2NT : 14HCP, 4432,4333
    4. 2D/H/S . 5-crd suit, Forcing 1 round, but may be min.
    5. 2C : 4441, 14-16 . Now responder tends to bid 2NT (=Ask).
    6. 3C/D/H/S : = strong, as above, Beta-Asks.
    7. 4NT : Ace-asking ( only makes sense with 9-10 Tricks on the way to 7 NT)
    1. 1C – 2C/D (9+)
    1. 2 in Suit : min. (4432,4333,4441)
    2. 2NT : max, bal.
    3. 3C : 4441, max. Then :
      - 3D : Asks for Singleton (even with semipos./6-crd m !)
      3H = H-singleton
      3S = S-singleton
      3NT = m-singleton
      - 3H / 3S : canapé, game-forcing
      - 3NT : 5-4 in m , slam-interest.
      Opener shows a fit, if m-Singleton (then cue-bids) ,
      or with 4H / 4S his M-Singleton (then cuebids)
    4. 3 D/H : Strong, Beta-Asks
    5. 3NT : see above, bal. 23-24 / 9 Tricks
    1. 1C - 2NT (13-15)
    1. 3C : 4441,14-16 . Then 3D = Asks for Singleton (show Suit: 3H=S-Singleton, 3S=C-Singleton, 3NT=D-Singleton, 4C = H-Singleton), then total-control-ask available
    2. 3D : Asks for a weak 4-crd M (probably 4441 min. or 4432 with weak doubleton)
    3. 3H/S : 5-crd suit
    4. 3NT : To play
    5. 4C/D/H/S : Strong, Beta-Asks
    1. 1C – 2H /2S (12+, 5-crd m. 2 honors, Asks )

    a) 1st Step : min., no Fit

    b) 2nd Step : min., Fit (=Hx+, Jxx+, xxxx+)

    c) 3rd Step : max., no Fit

    d) 4th Step : max., Fit

    Note ! flow around 3C: 3C = 4441 max. with 4 in Partner’s suit !

    A3. Over Enemy Interference

    1. 1C – enemy bid – X (Negative double , Note : at least 8-9 HCP !)
    1. Suit at the 2-level : minimum.(4 or 5 in der Suit) or max. (4-crd suit)
    2. Suit at the 3-level : max., 5-crd suit
    3. Cue-bid : Strong (suit set in next round = Beta-Asks
    4. 2NT : 23-24
    5. 3NT : 15-16 with Stopper
    6. 2C : 4441, 14-16
    1. 1C – X – Pass or 1 C – X – 1D
    2. Both negative. Pass doesn’t absolutely have to have C-tolerance (but a doubleton should usually be there). 1D one usually says if wanting to bid something and get out (weak with a good 5-crd/6-crd suit). Else pass the decision to partner. Opener normally bids again.

  • 1C – X – XX (= 8+)
  • Opener bids as over a semipositive bid. Preferably we double the enemy.

  • 1C – pass – 1D – X
    1. Pass : 4-crd C
    2. XX : 4-crd D, no 4-crd C
    3. 1 H / 1S = Suit
    4. 1 NT : 15-16, 4-4 in m
    5. 2C : 4441, 14-16
    6. 2D/H/S, 3C : Strong, Beta-Asks
    7. 2NT / 3NT : bal. 23-24 / 25-27 (one can also pass or XX)
    1. 1C – pass – 1D – Suit
      1. X : Shortness in enemy suit, max.
      2. 1 NT : 15-16, Stopper
      3. 2C : 4441, max
      4. 2 in Suit without a jump : max., 5332
      5. Cue-bid : Asks for Stopper
      6. Jump in Suit : Strong, Beta-Asks
      7. 2NT / 3NT : . 23-24 / 25-27

When the enemy overcall over a 1C-Opening is

    1. Overcall through 2C : Responder may canapé bid
    2. 2D overcall or higher : Responder bids naturally, not Canapé. Suit-bids also non-forcing, 5-crd suit. Forcing hands must start with a negative double and then later bid a suit.

    1. 1 NT Opening

    B1. Opening

    Responses

    1) 17-19 , bal.
    May include a 5-crd suit, poss. 6-3-2-2

    with 6-crd m

    a) 2C : Stayman, at least 0 HCP

    May not have a 4-crd M ( if invite like 1NT-2C-2X-2NT), which is alertable. If 0-6 P., then either 4-4 in M or 4-crd M + 5-crd m.

    b) 2D/H : Transfer.

    Then new suit = Game-forcing, except 1NT-2D-2H-2S : only forcing 1 round

    c) 2S : Strong Relay

(, asks for Distr., and 5-crd suits, usually slam-interest)

    d) 2NT : Transfer to C or D

    e) 3C / 3D : 6-crd with 2 top honors , nothing else

    (but better ideas welcome!)

    f) 3H : 5S+4H , invite

    g) 3S : 5-5 in m , weak

    h) 4C/D : SA-Texas

    with Semi-Solid suit

B2. Developments over Responses to 1 NT

    1. Over 1 NT - 2C (Stayman)
    1. 2D (no 4-crd M): - 2H by Responder shows 0-6 P, either 4H+4S or
      4H+5 m
      - 2S shows 0-6 P., 4S + 5 m
    2. 2H : - 2S by Responder shows 0-6 P, 4S + 5 m
      - Raise invite
    3. 2S : - 3C/D by Responder shows 0-6 P., 4H + 5 C/D
      - Raise invite
    4. 2 X : - 2NT invite
    1. Over 1 NT – 2D/H (Transfer)
      1. Over Transfers New suit is game-forcing,
        except 1NT-2D-2H-2S – only Forcing 1 round
      2. Accepting a Transfer with Jump : Max., 4 Trumps with min. 1 ½ Honors

  • Over 1 NT – 2S (strong Relay):
  • - 2NT : 5-3-3-2

    - then 3C asks for a 5-crd suit (3NT = 5-crd C)

    - 3H/3S asks for Raise, if Opener has 3 Cards, or for a cue-bid,

    if Opener has 5-crd „Support"

    - 3C : 4432 with 4C.

    - then 3D asks for 2nd Suit (3NT = 4-crd D)

    - 3H/3S asks for Raise, if Opener has 3/4 Cards, or (over 3H)

3S, if Opener has both H and 4S.

    - 3D : 4432 with 4-crd D + 4-crd M.

    - then 3H asks for 4-crd M (3S = S, 3NT = H)

    - 3S asks for Raise, if Opener has 3/4 Cards

    - 3H : 4432 with 4-4 in M

    - then 3S = Sets trumps + invites Cue-bids
    - 4C/D = Cue-bid for hearts

    • 3S : 4333, Minimum
    • 3NT : 4333, Maximum

    (over the 4333-Responses 4C asks for the 4-crd suit, whereupon 4NT = 4-crd C)

    1. Over 1 NT – 2NT (Transfer to C or D):

Opener must say 3C, then Responder bids

    - Pass or 3D – to play

    - 3H : 10+ P. with at least 5-crd clubs , then
    -3NT no slam-interest for C, other 3 suits covered
    - Cue-bids with Fit + (5 or more) controls

    - 3S : 10+ P. with at least 5-crd Diamonds , then as above

    - 3NT : 5-5 in m, slam-interest , then 4C or 4D to set trumps + cue-bids

    1. 2C Opening

    C1. Opening variants

    Responses (over all opening variants)

    1) 5-5 in m , 9-13

    a) 2D : waiting

    2) Good 6-crd C, 14-19

    b) 2H/S : Weak (c. 4-6 HCP) with a 6-crd suit

    3) Strong Two-suiter: Two-suiter with clubs (clubs not longer), 4-5 losers

From this there are the following negative inferences :

    1) 1D – 1H
    3C : promises 4D + 5/6C

    2) 1D – 1H/S
    2C : denies a good 6-crd club suit

C2. Rebids by Opener over Responses to 2C

    1. Over 2C – 2D
    1. 2H : strong two-suiter H / C
    2. 2S : strong two-suiter S / C
over both the auction develops as over a 2H / 2S opening
    3. 2NT : 5-5 in m’s, 9-13
    4. 3C : 6-crd C, 14-17 (no 4-crd Major on the side)
    5. 3NT : 6-crd C, 18-19
    6. 3D : strong two-suiter D/C
    1. Over 2C – 2H/S
      1. Pass : with 5-5 in m or 6-crd C/14-17
      2. 2NT : with strong two-suiter, 3C now asks for 2nd suit
      3. 3C : with 6-crd C / 18-19 and good doubleton in Partner’s suit
      4. Raise : with 6-crd C / 18-19 and Support in Partner’s suit

optional extension for strong two-suiter hands :
      5. 2NT : x or – in Partner’s suit
      6. 3 D/H/S : doubleton or tripleton in Partner’s suit
      7. 3NT : 5-4-2-2 with 5 in Partner’s suit
then 4C = Asks for Controls in side suits
        4D = D-control
        4H = Control in other M
        4S = both suits controlled
      8. 4C : 5-5-2-1 with 5 in Partner’s suit
then 4D = Asks for Controls in side suits
        4H = Control in D (then : Singleton)
        4S = Control in other M (then : Singleton !)
        4NT = both Controls
      9. 4D : 5-5-3-0 (6-4-3-0) with 5 in Partner’s suit + 3-crd Diamond
        then other M = Total-control-ask (0-5/6/…)
      10. 4H : 5-5-3-0 (6-4-3-0) with 5 in Partner’s suit + 3 in other M
        then 5D = Total-control-ask (0-5/6/…)

    1. 2H/S Openings

    D1. Opening

    Responses

    1) 11-16 , min. 5H/S + min. 4C, 5 ½ -7 losers

Clubs must not be the longer suit.
    Even 5440 with 4-4 in m, decent C
    and 5 ½ -7 losers use 2H/2S bids.

Note, with a 4-5 losers strong two-suiter, bid the same after a 2C opening !

    a) Pass – to play

    b) 3C – to play

    c) 2S (over 2H), 3D, 3H (over 2S)

    invite (2S=forcing for 1 Round !), no 7-Card-Fit in one of opener’s suits, 2S=min 5 Cards, 3D / 3H= min. 6 Cards

    d) Raise to 4C

= invite, covers 4 losers (maybe preemptive)

    e) Raise to 3H/3S

    = preempt (invites go through 2NT !)

    f) 2NT

= forcing, 12+, Asks for Distr.

    g) 3NT – to play

    h) Jump in new suit

= Splinter for the major! (except 2S-4H : to play !), then Cue-bids

    i) Jump to game in opener’s suit

    = To play

D2. Rebids by Opener over Responses to 2H/S

      1. 2H - 2S (=Forcing 1 round)
      1. 3S with 3-crd spades, Minimum
      2. 4S with 3-crd spades, Maximum
      3. Else natural (repeat 6-crd H, bid 5-crd C, with 1-5-3-4 with Diamond values 2NT, without D-values 3D)
      1. 2H - 3D (invite, not Forcing 1 round !)
        (2S - 3D/3H analogous)

Opener passes or bids naturally. Those who really want can also introduce the following precision:

      1. 3H : 6421, min
      2. 4H : 6421 max
      3. 3NT : spade-stopper, max.
      4. 3S : half-stop in spades, max.
      5. 4C : 5521 or 6511, with singleton diamond
      6. 4D : 5431, singleton spade, better than minimum
      7. 4S : 5530, 3-crd diamond, 0-3 controls
      8. 5C : 5530, 3-crd diamond, 4+ controls
      9. 5D : 5440, 4-crd D
      1. 2H – 2NT (invite or Game-forcing)

    a) 3C = 5422

    b) 3D = 1534 , 3 in other M = 3514th Both can also be 6430, in this
case you will rebid the 6-crd suit on later rounds.

    c) 3H/S = 6421

    d) 3NT = 5521

    e) 4C = 5530 with diamond void

    f) 4D = 5530 with major void

    g) 4H = 5440 with both Minors , decent Clubs

    Continuation over Responses to 2NT

    a ) Over 3C (5422)
    - 3 in the 5-crd M = invite
(you can play instead the direct raise as the invite, so then in this case three of opener’s 5-crd M over 2NT à Gamma asks - see below)

    - Game = To play
    - 4C = Gamma-Ask in Clubs,
    then
    1st Step : J or worse
    2nd Step : Q

    3rd Step : K

    4th Step : Ace

    5th Step : KQ

6th Step : AK or AQ

    7. Step : AKQ

    - One of Opener’s two suits = Alpha-Ask in the suit, then
    1stStep : no Control
    2nd Step : K

    3rd Step : Ace

    4th Step : AK

Over responses to both these asks are:
    - sign-offs

    - Josephine (in doubt, assume the M is agreed)

    - 4NT Ace-asking

    - Jump to 5 of Opener’s 5-crd M = Asks for Trump quality

    b) Over 3D or 3 in other M (5431)
    - 3 in Opener’s-M = invite
    (or Gamma – see above)
    - 4C = Gamma in C

    - Opener’s Singleton = Alpha-Ask in the 3-crd suit

    c ) Over 3H / 3S (6421)
    - 4C = Asks for second-round controls in side suits,
    then
    - 4D = only diamond control

    - 4H = only control in the M

    - 4S = both controls

    - 4D = Gamma-Ask in C

    - 4 in other M = Gamma-Ask in Opener’s M

    d) Over 3NT (5521)
    As in c), over 3H / 3S

    e) Over 4C (5530 with D-Void)

    - 4D = Alpha-Ask in the 3-crd suit

    f) Over 4D (5530 with 3-crd diamond)

    - Void = Alpha-Ask in Diamonds

    g) Over 4H (5440 with 4 diamond)

New Suit = Cue-bid (so Canapé is not bid)

    8.) 1D – 3D :
Opener bids Canapé only with 4-5 losers

Some Principles (later an suitable place to train) in Bidding over Opening with 1 in Suit :

1.) Opener’s suit kann zu dritt sein, if

    a) Clubs-Canapé , - 11-13 with any 6-crd C
    - 14+ with weak 6-crd C (with good C Open 2C !)

    b) Start of a Jump canapé :
Jump canapé is only bid with
    - 4 losers
    - 5 losers and 18-19/20 HCP
    Don’t Jump with 5 losers and 11-17 P. !

    2.) 1S – 2H = Non-forcing, semipos.
    with
5-crd H and likely S-Shortness. Opener bids new (=Canapé-) Suit only with
good Opening and good 5-crd or 6-crd suit, else Pass or 2S

3.) even for responder- canapé after 1 of a suit is forcing !
    with
a semipositive hand one bids either neg. and then 2NT or Rebids
    the 5-crd suit.

    4.) 1D/H/S – enemy overcall
    – Obersuit vom Partner by Opener = nat., non forcing

    - minor at the 2-level = beginning of a canapé, forcing
